The Promise Within Reach (2025)
A boy reaches up and holds the world in one hand.
That's the whole painting. No crown, no noise, no fractured sight. Just a young Black boy, eyes lifted, the sky wide open behind him, and everything he wants already in his grip.
I painted him because of what I hear too often. That kids from certain blocks are already lost. That the story is written before they get a say.
Give young people hope, possibility, opportunity, and belief, and they will reach past anything you imagined for them. The world can be theirs.
As I approached 46, this is what keeps me going. My nephew. My cousins. My mentees. The thousands of young people I walk beside every day at @chicagoscholars and @reachpathways. Their brilliance fuels my gratitude, my art, and my belief in what's possible.
This piece is for them. And for every dreamer who keeps reaching.
