I am Jeffery Beckham Jr., a Chicago painter working in acrylic and mixed media. My work sits in the tradition of neo expressionism, with crowns, eyes, fragmented faces, handwritten words and glyphs layered over saturated color. The subject underneath all of it is the inner life of Black leaders: belief, vision, pressure, and the weight of being seen.
I come to the canvas from the other side of leadership. By day I am CEO of Chicago Scholars, one of the city's largest college and career access organizations, and Co-CEO of REACH Pathways, an education technology platform serving tens of thousands of students nationally. The paintings are where I process what those rooms ask of a person.
