In Kingdoms & Crowns, I explore the depth, complexity, and brilliance of the Black experience through the lens of the chessboard—a game of power, intellect, and strategy. Each piece in this series transforms beautiful Black figures into living chess pieces, honoring the resilience, wisdom, and cultural richness that define our communities.
Chess, much like life, requires foresight, patience, and decisive moves. The kings and queens in this collection stand firm, their crowns representing both literal royalty and the unseen weight of legacy and responsibility. The knights, bishops, rooks, and pawns embody the many roles we play—protectors, strategists, warriors, and visionaries—each moving with purpose toward a future of liberation and excellence.
This series is a celebration of our beauty, our power, and our unbreakable spirit.
Just as every piece on the board has value, so too does every individual in our community. Kingdoms & Crowns is a testament to the truth that we are not just players in someone else’s game—we are the architects of our own destiny.
