This summer I was watching the @willsmithdocumentary Amend on Netflix and I saw this image of what appeared to be a family in the midst of protests in the 60’s running from the oppression of water hoses. As I thought about the image and it’s relation in the context of the world we live in now I wanted to reimagine it on canvas. The African American family unit is one of resilience… most families literally have grown at the roots of the red clay dirt of the south .. my family hailing from Alabama and Molena Georgia respectively. Even in the face of every challenge presented we run toward the light of hope. We over come with blood soaked tears and still find ways to thrive when given a fair chance to succeed. This piece, the largest I’ve created to date is the representation of the resilience of the black family.
